Former Executive Engineer, Wife Get Jail Terms In Graft Case In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A former Executive Engineer of Rural Works (RW) Division in Nabarangpur district of Odisha and his wife have been convicted and awarded jail terms by a court in a disproportionate assets (DA) case.

Simadri Nayak, retired Executive Engineer of RW division at Umarkote in Nabarangpur, and his wife Laxmi Nayak have been convicted by a special Vigilance court in Bhubaneswar here for possessing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 38,40,769.

The former Executive Engineer was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment in the case. Besides, the court slapped a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on him. Non-payment of the penalty would invite imprisonment for additional six months, an official release said.

His wife was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for one year in the DA case. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 2 lakh on her. She would undergo imprisonment for additional three months for non-payment of the penalty amount.

Following the conviction of the retired Executive Engineer, the Vigilance department will move the competent authority for stoppage of his pension, said an official.

In another case, retired superintendent of Odisha Warehousing Corporation Ananda Chandra Behera was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for one year by a special court in Balangir for possession of disproportionate assets.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs two lakh and in case of non-payment, he would have to undergo additional jail term for two months.

Odisha Vigilance will also move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Behera following his conviction, an release said.
