Former Maharashtra ATS Chief Himanshu Roy Commits Suicide

Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) chief Himanshu Roy allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver here on Friday.

According to reports, the 1988 batch IPS officer put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger around 1.40 pm at his Malabar Hills residence. He was brought dead to hospital.

A suicide note was recovered from his residence. The 54-year-old officer has mentioned about his battle with cancer for the last two year and depression as a result.

Roy led investigations into several high-profile cases, including Indian Premier League spot-fixing case and murders of journalist J Dey, Bollywood actor Laila Khan and law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta in Mumbai. While heading the anti-terror squad, he had arrested software engineer Anees Ansari for allegedly planning to blow up the American School.

In 2015, Roy was sidelined after he along with some police officer wrote to the Maharashtra home department alleging poor treatment by seniors and favouritism in transfers. He was removed as the ATS chief and posted as additional director general in charge of police housing, an insignificant role.

Months later, he went on medical leave.
