Bhubaneswar: Nine days after the death of eminent sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra, his son and former captain of the Odisha Ranji Trophy team and BCCI referee Prasanta Mohapatra succumbed to COVID-19 at the AIIMS-Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. He was 48.
Informing the media, AIIMS superintendent Sachidananda Mohanty said Prasanta along with his father Raghunath Mohapatra and elder brother Jasobant was admitted on April 22 after they tested positive for COVID-19.
“While Raghunath Mohapatra passed away on May 9, his two sons were undergoing treatment. Although Prasanta later tested negative, his condition suddenly deteriorated last night and despite the best efforts of the doctors, he lost the battle at 7.51 am today. The condition of Jasobant is critical,” Mohanty added.
Born on September 1, 1973, Prasanta, popularly known as Munna, was a dashing opener.
The right-handed batsman made his debut as an under-19 player of the state and played against Tamil Nadu. Later he debuted in the Ranji Trophy against Bihar in 1990. Apart from this, he had played for the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.
During his career, Prasanta has played 45 first-class matches scoring 2196 runs with a decent average of 30.08 with five centuries and 11 fifties to his credit. Besides, he has also played 17 List-A matches and scored 261 runs with an average of 16.31.
After his retirement, the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) had appointed him as a match referee. Prior to his untimely death, Prasant has officiated more than 40 domestic matches.
