Bhubaneswar: Noted freedom fighter and litterateur Goura Chandra Mohapatra passed away at the age of 104 at Bhadrak district headquarters hospital at 5.40 pm on Tuesday.
Mohapatra, born on June 18, 1915, is the youngest son of Kanta Kabi Laxmikanta Mohapatra.
He was the youngest prisoner of Brahmapur jail in 1942. Mohapatra joined the freedom movement and is also known for accepting the maximum challenges while fighting the British. He had also participated in the Quit India movement and later worked in academics.
Condoling the death of the veteran freedom fighter Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, “As a true Gandhian, he dedicated his entire life for the promotion of Gandhian values and social upliftment. In his death, we have lost one of the last pillars of the freedom movement.” He conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Mohapatra was engaged in rendering social service to the distressed in his old age also.
MP Bhartruhari Mahtab also condoled the death of the freedom fighter and said, “Very sad to hear about the demise of eminent freedom fighter Gour Chandra Mohapatra. He was not only a literary person and educationist but was also a social reformer and an organisational man. During my stay in Bhadrak and later because of his involvement with Odisha Freedom Fighters, I had come in close contact with him and his family. I pray that his soul rests in peace. I share my grief with Gurukalyan and Prabhukalyan and their family.”
