Bhubaneswar: Odisha, known for its rich cultural heritage, is steadily emerging as a cradle of talent for the global entertainment industry. Actors and filmmakers, hailing from the state, have made significant inroads into Bollywood and Hollywood, showcasing versatility, depth, and global appeal.

From pioneering legends who broke barriers decades ago to fresh faces earning accolades at prestigious festivals, these actors and filmmakers have brought immense pride to Odisha on both national and global stages. Here’s a look at some of the prominent names who have carried the Odia identity into the limelight.

Sadhu Meher: He laid early groundwork for Odia representation in Hindi cinema. Debuting in the 1969 classic ‘Bhuvan Shome’, he earned the National Film Award for Best Actor for ‘Ankur ‘(1974) and starred in acclaimed films like ‘Nishant’ (1975) and ‘Manthan’ (1976). His later work included popular 1990s TV series ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’, establishing a legacy of impactful performances.

Dolly Jena (Bijaya Jena): Popularly known as Dolly Jena, she emerged as a trailblazer for Odia women in film. After debuting in ‘Razia Sultan’ in 1983, she received praise for roles in ‘Hakim Babu’ and ‘Jaga Balia’ (both 1983). She transitioned to directing with ‘Tara’ (1992), which won her a National Award for Best Director, highlighting her multifaceted contributions as an actor, director, and producer.

Nandita Das: Nandita Das of Odia descent from her father’s side is one of India’s most acclaimed actresses and filmmakers. She made her acting debut with ‘Parinati’ (1989) and gained recognition through powerful performances in ‘Fire’ (1996) and ‘Earth’ (1998). Her directorial ventures, ‘Firaaq’ (2008) and ‘Manto’ (2018), were screened at international festivals including Toronto and Cannes, cementing her reputation as a socially conscious storyteller with global appeal.

Mira Nair: Globally renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, who spent her formative years in Rourkela, where she was also born, and later in Bhubaneswar before moving outside the state for higher education, made her directorial debut with ‘Salaam Bombay!’ (1988), which won the Camera d’Or at Cannes and was nominated for an Academy Award. She went on to direct ‘Mississippi Masala’ (1991), ‘Monsoon Wedding’ (2001), ‘The Namesake’ (2006), and ‘Queen of Katwe’ (2016), blending Indian narratives with international sensibilities.

Neeraj Kabi: The actor of Paatal Lok fame made his debut with Odia film ‘Shesha Drusti’ in 1997. The movie was directed by Apurba Kishore Bir, and went on to bag the National Award for best film. He was born to Tushar Kabi, an Odia. Neeraj portrayed a wide variety of character roles and gained acclaim for roles in ‘Ship of Theseus’, ‘Talvar’, ‘Sacred Games’, ‘Paatal Lok’, ‘Sherni’ and ‘The Good Wife’. Beyond films and shows, he founded Pravah Theatre Laboratory in 1996, which serves as a research, training, and production space, focusing on blending Indian traditional performing arts with contemporary styles.

Chittaranjan Tripathy: This native of Chandabali made his debut as director/writer with the critically acclaimed Odia film Dhauli Express (2007), while won multiple Odisha State Film Awards. He also directed the 2009 film ‘Mukhyamantri’. He also featured in ‘Talvar’ (2015), ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ (2017), ‘Jagga Jasoos’ (2017) and in Netflix’s ‘Sacred Games’ (2018), in which his role as Trivedi was widely appreciated. He is also the first Odia to be appointed as the Director of the National School of Drama (NSD).

Pitobash Tripathy: Pitobash Tripathy, a versatile actor from Deuli in Nayagarh, made his mark with ‘I Am Kalam; (2010). He has since appeared in films like ‘Shor in the City’ (2011), ‘Begum Jaan’ (2017) and ‘Mom’ (2017). His Hollywood debut came with ‘Disney’s Million Dollar Arm’ (2014). His recent role in ‘Monkey Man’ (2024) further demonstrates his crossover success.

Sukumar Tudu: He began his career with ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’ (2008) and has steadily built a portfolio of character-driven roles. His notable performances include ’12th Fail’ (2023), where he played ASI Albel Singh, and appearances in films like ‘Dustbin’ (2025) and ‘Jolly LLB 3’ (2025). In Odia cinema, he acted in ‘Kuhudi’ (2024), ‘Barang 1999’ (2023) and ‘Malyagiri’ (2023).

Robin Das: Veteran actor Robin Das has contributed to both Odia and Hindi cinema. He debuted with ‘Indradhanura Chhai’ (1993) and has since appeared in films like ‘Mary Kom’ (2014), ‘Kaun Kitney Paani Mein’ (2015), ‘Batla House’ (2019), and ‘The Goat Life’ (2024). His career spans decades, reflecting the depth of Odia talent in Indian cinema.

Prem Parija: Prem Parija, originally from Bhubaneswar, rose to prominence with Disney+ Hotstar 2023 action-thriller series ‘Commando’ in which he portrayed the titular Commando Virat. This saw his transition from working behind the camera as an assistant director in ‘Batla House’ and ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’ to playing the lead role. His natural performance in the action-drama has made him one of the youngest Odias to break into mainstream Hindi streaming entertainment.

Sulagna Panigrahi: Sulagna Panigrahi began her career with the television serial ‘Amber Dhara’ (2007) before making her Bollywood debut in ‘Murder 2’ (2011). She has acted in several TV shows, including ‘Do Saheliyaan’ and ‘Bidaai’, and continues to balance roles in both television and films, earning praise for her expressive performances.

Preeti Panigrahi: Preeti Panigrahi made her debut with ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ (2024), a film that won international acclaim. Her portrayal of Mira earned her the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, establishing her one of the most promising talents in global cinema. She also made Odisha proud by winning the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor (Female) in 2025 for her role.

Jagannath Seth: Jagannath Seth appeared in films like Lanka (2011) as a child actor and gained recognition with Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki (2023). He also starred in the web series ‘The Jengaburu Curse’ (2023) and the Odia film ‘Bou Buttu Bhuta’ (2025), showcasing his versatility across languages and formats.
