Berhampur: A tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) of Hindustan Petroleum (HP) turned turtle near the famous tourist spot in Ganjam Tampara on National Highway 16 on Wednesday morning.
Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and blocked the NH from both sides where the accident occurred. According to Fire Brigade sources, there is some leakage from the tanker and we are continuously spraying water on the ill-fated tanker to cool it down. Arrangements were made to empty the tanker. Panic gripped the local areas as the news spread. Police stopped vehicular movement on the route to avert any untoward incident.
The driver lost control and vehicle overturned amidst dense fog and poor visibility between 5.30 am and 6 am.
Ganjam collector Vijay Amrit Kulange, Ganjam Superintendent of Police, Brijesh Roy and other senior officers are already on the spot and supervising the operations.
One police van from Chatrapur, which was on the way to the accident spot with 3 cops also turned turtle when the driver tried to save a biker, sources said.
