GMU To Have New Building To Meet Classroom Shortage

Gangadhar Meher University (GMU), Sambalpur, is set to have a new building on its premises to meet the problem of shortage of classrooms.

The construction work of the building, which is proposed to have 15 classrooms, has begun. The three-storeyed new building is coming up on an area of 756 square metres and is expected to be completed within a year. The building work is being done by the CPWD and the estimated cost is around Rs 2.64 crore, reports the Times of India.

“The university has been facing problems owing to the shortage of classrooms for a very long time. The number of departments has increased. Four new departments were opened recently. However, there aren’t enough classrooms in the varsity. But the new academic building will help resolve the problem to some extent,” said UC Pati, Deputy Registrar of GMU.

Pati further said that the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) has sanctioned Rs 275 crore to GMU for various development work of the institution. The new academic building is being constructed from the funds sanctioned by RUSA. At present, there are 40 classrooms in the university, which offers 26 PG courses, 27 UG courses, 10 PhD and 19 MPhil courses, apart from the self-financing ones. The student strength of GMU is around 5,500.

He also informed that an administrative block has been proposed to be constructed on the premises of GMU.
