Washington: There’s good news for whizkids and techies who revel in this digital age.
They were fearing the worst vis-à-vis prices of their favourite electronic items skyrocketing as a result of Donald Trump’s tariff policy.
But it seems the Trump administration has exempted smartphones, computers and other electronic goods from reciprocal tariffs which were announced earlier this month, Bloomberg reported.
Hence the possibility of increase in prices is minimal in immediate future.
Electronics giants like Apple and Samsung will also be heaving a big sigh of relief, as they were staring at a potential increase in costs to access the US market.
The exemptions, published late on Friday by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), excluded the products from Trump’s 145 per cent China tariffs and baseline 10 per cent global duties on all other countries.
As per CBP, the exclusions will apply to smartphones, laptops, desktop computers, hard drives, computer processors, and memory chips, which are generally n0t made in the US.
Among other exempted products are machines used to make semiconductors, a huge reprieve for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), along with other chipmakers.
