Sundargarh: A freight train derailed on the key Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai up line in the Bondamunda section of Odisha’s Sundargarh district early Saturday morning, prompting swift action from South Eastern Railway (SER) authorities.
According to sources, two wagons of the goods train transporting cargo from Bondamunda to Rourkela went off the track near Bondamunda K-cabin at around 7.45 am. Within minutes of the incident, railway officials, engineers, and carriage-and-wagon staff arrived at the site to begin restoration work, focusing on re-railing the wagons and clearing the affected track.
The Bondamunda section under the Chakradharpur Railway Division of SER, located near the steel city of Rourkela, is a critical junction on the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai route and home to one of the largest diesel locomotive sheds in the area, supporting heavy freight and passenger traffic across Odisha’s mineral-rich belt.
Further updates on train movement and restoration timelines are awaited.
