Google Maps Gets ‘Stay Safer’ Feature To India
Google on Wednesday introduced a safety feature named ‘Stay Safer’ in Google Maps, aimed at people travelling in auto-rickshaws and taxis.
Google Maps will notify users if their taxis or auto-rickshaws go off route and will let users share their live locations with their friends and families, just as it works on WhatsApp.
The new feature will be available on Android phones.
By selecting ‘Stay Safer’ and ‘Get off-route alerts’ options, users will get a notification if the vehicle deviates 0.5 km from the route. This notification along with a live status can be shared with friends and family.
“Through our extensive research across India, we found that a lot of people limit their mobility due to safety-related concerns. To address this, we are launching another India-first feature that will deliver a more relevant and reliable experience to our users. Our new ‘Stay Safer’ feature on Google Maps will alert users who are travelling in taxis, auto-rickshaws, etc. in case their vehicle goes off route, giving them peace of mind,” said Amanda Bishop, Product Manager at Google Maps.
