New Delhi: The government has issued an important advisory, urging citizens across the country not to store petrol or diesel in bulk. This comes after an incident at a fuel pump in Tamil Nadu, where petrol was reportedly being filled into a loose container, raising serious safety concerns.
“Petrol and diesel are adequately available at retail outlets across the country. Consumers are advised not to take or store fuel in loose or inappropriate containers, as it poses serious safety risks,” the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has posted on X.
“It has come to notice that at one retail outlet in Tamil Nadu, petrol was being taken in a loose container, which is unsafe and not advisable,” the message said.
“The concerned petrol pump has been suspended, and appropriate action has been taken,” it added.
Retail outlets have been instructed to strictly follow safety guidelines while dispensing fuel. Any violation will invite strict action, it has been said.

Handling and storage of fuel in inappropriate containers and without adequate safety measures can cause severe accidents, resulting in loss of life and damage to property.
Officials said that law enforcement agencies across the country have been asked to maintain vigil to prevent such activities that may cause major accidents.
Reports have come in from certain quarters of a section of people spreading rumours about a sudden stop in supply of petrol and diesel, fueling a rush by others to stock up. There are also some who are planning to take advantage of the situation and sell fuel in the black market.
