Hyderabad: Tension flared at the ‘Dawat-e-Ramzan’ exhibition in Hyderabad, organised by tennis star Sania Mirza’s sister, Anam Mirza, after a man allegedly fired gunshots into the air during an altercation.
The incident occurred on Saturday at King’s Palace in Gudimalkapur, prompting a swift police response. According to officials, the dispute initially broke out between shop owners at the exhibition.
The inspector of Gudimalkapur police station told News Media that: “A small fight broke out at the exhibition between owners of a perfume shop and a toy shop. Suddenly, he (accused Haseebuddin) unnecessarily fired two rounds in the air with his licensed pistol. We have registered a case under the Arms Act and are investigating why the firing was carried out.”
Authorities clarified that the accused, identified as Haseebuddin alias Hyder, was not directly involved in the shopkeeper’s argument but intervened and discharged his weapon.
“The gun license he is holding is from Nampally. We received a police complaint. The accused is saying that everyone tried to attack him, so he fired in the air. We found the shells. The weapon has been seized,” the police added.
Md Munawar, assistant commissioner of police, Kulsumpura, said that the conflict escalated when a customer named Farhan got into a heated argument with the organisers.
“After a heated argument, Farhan and his friends attacked some people, including one Ateequddin. All of a sudden, he whipped out his licensed gun and fired two rounds in the air,” the ACP said.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. As per reports, the police have arrested the accused, seized the weapon, and launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances behind the shooting.
