Panipat (Haryana): The words “Mirror, Mirror On The Wall ….”, uttered by the Evil Queen in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”, have a sinister ring to them. While the queen failed to cause any serious harm to Snow White, Poonam from Panipat is accused of drowning four children, including her own son, as reported by NDTV.
Among those killed were three girls. The news channel has reported that Poonam killed them as she believed they were prettier than her.
The Panipat police reportedly said on Wednesday that Poonam’s crimes came to light after she killed her six-year-old niece on Monday. The whole family had then gathered for a marriage.
The young victim, identified as Vidhi, lived in Sonipat and had come to Naultha village in Panipat’s Israna area to attend a relative’s wedding with her family. She was accompanied by her grandfather Pal Singh, grandmother Omwati, father Sandeep, mother, and 10-month-old younger brother.
The incident occurred when the wedding procession arrived in Naultha, and the family left with it around 1.30 pm on Monday, the police said.
Vidhi’s father received a phone call soon after that she was missing, and the family began searching for her. About an hour later, her grandmother Omwati went to a storeroom on the first floor of their relative’s house. The storeroom door was bolted from the outside. When she opened it, she found Vidhi with her head submerged in a water tub and feet on the ground.
The child was rushed to the NC Medical College, where doctors declared her dead. Vidhi’s father later registered an FIR, alleging that she was murdered. An investigation led the police to Poonam, Vidhi’s paternal aunt.
It has been reported by NDTV that Poonam had a disturbing history of drowning children, driven by jealousy and resentment, because she did not want anyone to look prettier than her.
She specifically targeted young, pretty girls, the police have reportedly said. Officials have claimed that Poonam confessed to killing four children — three girls and her own son. She drowned all of them.
Poonam is accused of killing her sister-in-law’s daughter in 2023. She murdered her own son the same year, just to avoid suspicion. she drowned her son just to avoid suspicion. In August this year, she killed another child in the Siwah village, again because Poonam felt that she was prettier.
Had the Vidhi murder case not been solved, the three killings may have been considered as accidents.
