HC To Hear Plea Challenging Height Restriction On Durga Puja Idols In Cuttack On Wednesday

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court here on Monday directed Commissionerate Police to submit an affidavit on restricting the height of idols in community pandals during Durga Puja in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

It posted the next hearing on the petition challenging the order for September 30.

Senior lawyer and president of Cuttack’s Balu Bazaar Puja Committee Suryakant Sangneria said that they had challenged the Police Commissioner’s order to restrict the height of the idol to four feet in the High Court through a writ petition.

“The High Court after conducting a preliminary hearing ordered the Police Commissioner to file an affidavit. The matter will come up for hearing day after tomorrow,” he added.

In the September 17 order, Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi had said that height of idols in Durga Puja pandals should not exceed four feet as per the guidelines issued by the Odisha government.
