Bhubaneswar: Heatwave condition spread to more areas in the state on Sunday as 7 urban places recorded temperature of 40 degree Celsius or more compared to two centres on Saturday.
According to evening bulletin of the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD), the mercury rose particularly in western Odisha with Sambalpur emerging as the hottest place in the state with 40.8 degree Celsius. Balangir, Jharsuguda and Hirakud recorded 40.4 degree each.
While Baripada and Talcher registered 40 degree Celsius, it was 40.5 degree in Boudh, the bulletin stated.
The temperature also went up in Twin Cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack with 38.4 and 37.4 degree Celsius respectively. Seaside town Gopalpur continued to record lowest temperature in the state at 30.6 degree Celsius.
On Saturday, 8 places in the state had registered 39 degree Celsius or more.
The IMD forecast no major change in maximum temperature (day temperature) in the state during next 4-5 days. It will be above normal by 2 to 3 degree Celsius at a few places in Interior Odisha during next 4-5 days.
It also stated that light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at one or two places in Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput districts.
