Bhubaneswar: Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions may prevail in the districts of Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Angul and Cuttack in Odisha during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday.
Heatwave condition is also likely in Sambalpur, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Balangir, Sonepur, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Nabarangpur, Deogarh, and Nuapada.
Hot and humid warning has also been issued for Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Gopalpur, Jharsugada, Bargarh, Rayagada, Koraput, and Puri.
Amid the prevail intense heat conditions, Baripada and Balasore recoded the highest maximum temperature of 36°C by 8.30 am followed by Malkangiri (35°C), Keonjhar (35°C), Bhawanipatna (34.4°C), Bhubaneswar (33.8°C), Jagatsinghpur (33.4°C), Angul, Boudh, Titlagarh at 33°C each and Cuttack (32.6°C).
According to the morning bulletin, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely at many places in Odisha during next 3 days till May 1 and then heatwave to severe heat wave conditions may prevail at isolated places on May 2. The maximum temperature is expected to remain 4 to 6°C above normal in some districts during the next 4 to 5 days.
On Sunday, the mercury shot up to 43°C at 12 places in the state. Angul was the hottest at 44.3°C followed by Boudh (44.1°C), Baripada (44°C) and Nayagarh as well as Cuttack at 43.7°C. The mercury touched 43.6°C at Dhenkanal and 43.5°C at Talcher, Titilagarh and Malkangiri. Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 43.2°C, down from 44.6°C on Saturday.

The state has already experienced 16 heatwave days in two spells this month. With hot weather condition dangerously tightening its grip over Odisha and weather agency predicting continuation of the same till May 9, this season could turn out to be the worst since since 1998 when the state had seen 27 heatwave days between mid-April and May.
Odisha usually witnesses 11 heatwave days between April and June.
