Kolkata/Guwahati: The first phase of polling for West Bengal and Assam assembly saw heavy voters’ turnout on Saturday.
While West Bengal saw 79.79% of electorate casting their vote in 30 out of the state’s 294 assembly constituencies, the turnout in 47 constituencies in Assam was 73.38%.
Voting continued till 7 pm, with those who are COVID positive being allowed to cast their ballots post 6 pm, after completion of those who were in the queue. They were required to submit a certificate issued by the Designated Health Officer in Form 19 C.
West Bengal will have eight-phase elections, with the next round being on April 1, when the high-profile Nandigram seat will be at stake. Assam polls will be conducted in three phases.
Counting of votes will be on May 2.
