Dhaka, Bangladesh: In another shocking case of alleged premeditated murder against minorities in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, a 23-year-old Hindu youth was burned alive inside a garage in Narsingdi city, about 50 km away from Dhaka, on Friday night.
The victim has been identified as Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, son of one Khokan Chandra Bhowmik, resident of Lakshmipur village of Cummila district. Chanchal worked at a garage in Khanabari Mosque Market area in Nasingdi Police Lines. The incident occurred when the garage — in which Chanchal was sleeping after work on Friday night — was set ablaze by unidentified people. He died of suffocation and burn injuries, the NDTV reported.
Locals and eyewitnesses have called it a pre-meditated murder. CCTV footage show the attackers setting the garage on fire. They are yet to be identified, though.
“Given the seriousness of the case, police are conducting a thorough probe. Several police teams are working to identify and arrest the culprits,” an official said.
The tragedy underscores deepening unrest in the neighbouring country. India had earlier expressed concerns over the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh with the rising number of cases of violence against Hindus being reported following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina government.
