India Beat Indonesia To Win Maiden Thomas Cup Title; Sports Minister Announces Rs 1 Cr Reward
New Delhi: India scripted history in badminton by defeating 14-time champions Indonesia to win the Thomas Cup for the first time.
Indian men’s team of Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Indonesia 3-0 to win their first-ever Thomas Cup gold in the final held at Impact Arena in Thailand.
Lakshya defeated Anthony Ginting by 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a thrilling tie. Satwik-Chirag defeated Ahsan-Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19, to clinch the most sensational victory of their career and give India a 2-0 lead.
In the third game, Srikanth defeated Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21 to make it 3-0.
India lifted the cup without losing a match.
Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has congratulated the boys and announced cash award of Rs 1 crore after the historic victory.
