Bhubaneswar: A retired Army Colonel was killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle in Niladri Vihar area of Odisha capital on Saturday.
As per preliminary information, the mishap took place around 5.30 am near Shani Temple in Niladri Vijar under the jurisdiction of Chandrasekharpur Police Station of the city when the victim, identified as Rabindra Kumar Benera (64), was returning home after a morning walk. A doctor by profession, Behera was a resident of Defence Colony in Niladri Vihar.
After being hit by the speeding vehicle, Behera, a former Colonel in a Territorial Army, was critically injured and left bleeding on the road. The vehicle fled the scene after the accident.
He was rescued by locals and rushed to the Capital Hospital where doctors declared him dead. His family members were informed and a postmortem was conducted, sources said.
A police team visited the mishap site and registered a case. Investigation is underway to trace the vehicle and the driver.
Police said steps have been initiated to examine the CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle involved in the accident.
