Mumbai: Not for the first time, Maharashtra politicians disgraced themselves as Shiv Sena (Shinde) office-bearers allegedly assaulted and threatened doctors and hospital staff in Palghar.
One of them also slapped a receptionist and threatened a female employee when they tried to intervene, CCTV visuals showed from the incident which played out at the Relief Hospital, in the wee hours of Sunday.
The trigger was the discharge of a ‘Govinda’, one of Krishna devotees who took part in the ‘Dahi Handi’ tradition on the occasion of Janmashtami. ‘Govinda’ troupe members were angered after being handed a bill of Rs 19,866 as treatment costs of Govindas injured during a ‘Dahi Handi’.
After a heated argument, Shiv Sena workers allegedly verbally abused, threatened and assaulted several on-duty hospital staff.
According to the complaint lodged by a hospital employee, Shiv Sena district chief Kundan Sankhe, city chief Rahul Gharat and others entered the emergency department and argued with the doctors.
Some of them reportedly barged into the intensive care unit (ICU). The mob allegedly threatened a nurse in the ICU, removed the IV drip of an injured ‘Govinda’, and took him away from the hospital.

Palghar police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Medical Services Protection Act.
Seventeen persons have been named in the case, including Sankhe, Gharat and Rohit Gavit, son of local MLA Rajendra Gavit.
“This is hooliganism by Mahayuti politicians. They don’t believe in law. In Palghar, they have beaten a receptionist. I am told even doctors were assaulted. It is unacceptable. When will there be accountability?” an official told NDTV.
The Supreme Court recently denied bail to a Shiv Sena corporator who was arrested in July for hitting a female doctor at a civic hospital in Thane.
