Rayagada: A cook and an attendant of a government-run hostel in Odisha’s Rayagada district were removed while its assistant manager was suspended after a purported video showing attack on students by fellow boarders went viral.
As per sources, at least three students sustained injuries in the brutal attack that reportedly took place last week at the hostel located in Gunupur of the district. The injured students received medical treatment in hospital.
A complaint has also been lodged by the district welfare department with the police against nine students involved in the incident that reportedly took place at Gunupur of the district. The students involved in the incident have been suspended from the hostel for one month.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind the alleged attack, said additional district magistrate (ADM) of Rayagada Nihar Ranjan Kanwar. The administration is also planning to engage counsellors to guide the students and prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.
A video of the incident, which reportedly took place on March 4, appeared on social media on Saturday showing two Class VIII students and a Class IX student being thrashed by at least nine others. The hostel run by the ST and SC Development department has 100 boarders.
Following the incident, parents of the injured students, demanding strict action, submitted a petition to the administration on Monday seeking the expulsion of the unruly boarders and dismissal of the staff responsible for negligence.
