Bhubaneswar: Can’t find hand sanitizers in the market? Fret not, here’s how you can make it at home:
- Add 2/3 cup 99 per cent rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or ethanol to a bowl. It is normally available at pharmacies. 91 per cent alcohol can also be used.
- Add 1/3 cup aloe vera gel to it.
- Optional: Add 8-10 drops of essential oil such as lavender, vanilla, peppermint, grapefruit.
- Mix the contents and store it in a bottle.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of USA recommends at least 60 per cent alcohol in the mixture to work effectively.
What about Vodka?
Reports about Vodka being used are not as effective because it is 40 per cent ethanol. In fact, American Vodka maker Tito’s tweeted clarifying the same:
Per the CDC, hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is 40% alcohol, and therefore does not meet the current recommendation of the CDC. Please see attached for more information. pic.twitter.com/QNEFOXxYPQ

Health authorities have asked people to wash hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds as the most effective way to prevent the spread of virus. Alcohol-based sanitizers are the second line of defense.
