Bhubaneswar: Huge quantity of ganja was seized from a car after it met with an accident on National Highway-16 near PN College Square in Odisha’s Khurda district in the early hours of Sunday.
According to sources, police found several packets of ganja while inspecting the car and informed the Excise Department for further investigation. However, the driver and its occupants had already fled the spot.
An investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the transportation of the contraband.
This comes close on the heels of seizure of Marijuana worth over Rs 9 crore from two female passengers at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar on January 6.
On November 1 last year, Odisha Police launched a drive to eliminate cannabis cultivation by 2026 and more than 28 lakh cannabis/ganja plants have been destroyed on the first day. A few days later, police seized over 3,500 kg cannabis under its ‘Green Clean Mission’, and arrested 80 individuals. In addition, cash to the tune of Rs 15 lakh and 20 vehicles used in the illegal cannabis trade were confiscated. Last December saw police and Excise department teams conduct raids and destroy illegal cannabis grown on a hill over 42 acre near Pengam village in Gajapati district.
