New Delhi: Hyundai launched its much-awaited car – the all new Santro on Tuesday, at a starting price of Rs 3.89 lakh. The prices go up to Rs 5.46 lakh for the top end.

It slots between the Eon and Grand i10 in the Hyundai line-up and will compete against the likes of Maruti Wagon R, Tata Tiago and Maruti Celerio.

The ‘sunshine’ car was unveiled by superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was also the brand ambassador back when the 1st model was launched 20 years back. “My association with Santro is now 20 long years. The only longer association I have had in my life in terms of relationship is with my wife, which will be 27 years on October 25,” said King Khan at the event.

The new Santro is powered by a 1100 cc, 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 69 bhp of power and 99 Nm of torque. The ARAI rated fuel economy is 20.3 kmpl for the petrol variant and 30.48 km/kg for the CNG variant. It comes with an option of a new 5-speed AMT gearbox too.

The CNG variant has a 8-kg tank in the boot of the car. The engine produces 59 bhp power and 84 Nm torque in the CNG mode. CNG and AMT options are available only in the mid Magna and Sportz trims.

On the inside is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with mirrorlink, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay aad Android Auto.

The car gets first-in-class rear AC vents. There is no climate control system, however.

Hyundai claims that it has used a good proportion of high strength steel to ensure safety. Driver side airbag is standard across the range and the passenger side airbag is available only on the top end Asta model.

The car is available in seven colour options – blue, red, green, white, grey, silver and gold.

The new Santro doesn’t get LED daytime lamps nor alloy wheels.

The new Santro measures 3610 mm in length, 1645 mm in width and 1560 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2400 mm and the company claims that it offers the best in class rear legspace.

“Today is a Historic moment as we announce the world premiere of the all new Santro. The Hyundai Santro is an iconic and legendary brand in India that has won the hearts of millions of customers for last two decades. The magic of Santro continues with The all new Santro receiving overwhelming response in less than two weeks,” said Mr. Y K Koo, MD & CEO, Hyundai India.

The new Santro has already received over 23000 bookings with 30 per cent of that for the AMT variants, the company said. The pricing is introductory and is applicable only for the first 50,000 customers.
