Kochi: A distressing case of a woman being abused by her husband and in-laws, and ultimately forcing her to take her life, has been reported from Kerala.
A 23-year-old pregnant woman, identified as Faseela, was found hanging at her husband’s home in Vellangular, in Kerala’s Thrissur district, on July 29.
Following a complaint by Faseela’s family, alleging that the suicide was the result of extreme domestic violence, Irinjalakuda police arrested her husband Naufal and mother-in-law Ramla.
The family gave police WhatsApp messages in which Faseela described repeated instances of abuse by her husband and mother-in-law.
In messages sent to her mother, Faseela wrote that despite being pregnant for the second time, her husband had kicked her in the stomach multiple times. She also complained that he had broken her hand, and her mother-in-law subjected her to constant verbal abuse.
In one of her last messages, Faseela wrote to her mother, “I am going to die, or they will kill me.”
Police have registered a case under charges of abetment to suicide and other relevant sections.
The body of Faseela, who is survived by a son, was handed over to her family following post-mortem at the Government Medical College in Thrissur.
