Mumbai: The family of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput has objected to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report in the 2020 death case, calling it “an eyewash” and accusing the agency of not presenting complete details before the court. The family has said it will challenge the report, which gives actor Rhea Chakraborty and others a clean chit.
The CBI, in its closure report, concluded that Rajput’s death was a case of suicide and found no evidence of foul play or abetment to suicide by Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, or any other individual. The report said that between June 8 and June 14, 2020, none of the accused were staying with Rajput, and that Rhea had left his apartment on June 8 — six days before the actor was found dead.
The agency also stated that there was no proof of financial irregularities or misappropriation of the actor’s assets. According to the report, Rhea took only a laptop and an Apple watch belonging to her, both of which Rajput had gifted her.
However, the actor’s family has strongly contested these findings. In a statement, they described the report as “flimsy and incomplete”, alleging that the CBI did not submit crucial supporting documents such as witness statements, chats, and medical records. “If the CBI really wanted to find the truth, they would have filed the full report with all supporting evidence. What they’ve done is an eyewash,” said Advocate Varun Singh, the family’s lawyer.
The family plans to file a protest petition against the closure report, contending that several important leads were ignored and that the investigation did not examine the alleged circumstances leading to Rajput’s death.
A court hearing on the matter has been scheduled for December 20, where the CBI’s findings and the family’s objections are expected to be discussed.
Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra apartment on June 14, 2020. His death triggered massive nationwide outrage and multiple investigations involving the Mumbai Police, the Enforcement Directorate, the Narcotics Control Bureau, and the CBI.
While Rhea Chakraborty faced intense media scrutiny and was later arrested in a related drug case before being granted bail, she and her brother have now been cleared of all charges in connection with Rajput’s death. The family, however, maintains that the fight for justice is “far from over.”
