Bhopal: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indore, could become the first top-rung B-school to offer a course in Sanskrit.

The course will, however, be offered as a non-academic voluntary programme, introducing the students to basic Sanskrit, The Hindu has reported, adding the move is being initiated based on popular demand on the campus.

“We were approached by the students and faculty members after the International Yoga Day for the introduction of the course. Since most scriptures were in Sanskrit, they said it was difficult for them to understand them. And translations are often twice removed from the truth,” institute director Himanshu Rai told the newspaper.

The Sanskrit class could follow an hour of yoga, and if there is considerable interest among the student, the subject could as well be institutionalised, he said, but made it clear that Sanksrit is not being “inflicted” on anyone.

The newspaper said that the institute is also promoting other languages such as Tamil, Telegue and Kannada. The institute library has been stacked with books in these languages.
