IMD Issues Flash Flood Alert For Odisha, Predicts Depression Over Bay Of Bengal In Next 12 Hours

Bhubaneswar: With most parts of south and coastal Odisha receiving heavy rainfall since Saturday night, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday sounded flash flood alert in the state.

The IMD said a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal with associated cyclonic circulation is very likely to move west-north-west and concentrate into a depression over the north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of north Odisha and West Bengal coasts during the next 12 hours.

It is very likely to move west-north-west across north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh during subsequent 2-3 days.

Under its influence, there will be heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall across the state for three days till September 14.

In view of the heavy rainfall, IMD has issued an advisory to the state government to take necessary precautions as there will be flash floods in hilly areas.

Besides, there will be temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, underpass roads, and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas and the possibility of some damage to informal/kutcha roads in semi-urban and rural areas.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along and off the Odisha coast, north and the west-central Bay of Bengal from September 12 to 14 and those in the deep sea areas are advised to return to the coast by Sunday night as squally weather with wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph will make the sea very rough.

Besides, local cautionary (LC) signal-3 has been hoisted in all four ports at Dhamra, Paradip, Astarang (Puri) and Gopalpur due to bad weather and squally winds.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Boudh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Cuttack.

Heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Mayurbhanj.
