Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is set to soon install six High Wind Speed Recorders (HWSRs) across Odisha’s vulnerable coastal regions to enhanc
e the measurement of extreme winds during cyclonic events.
IMD Regional Centre Director Manorama Mohanty confirmed the development, stating that the devices will help provide more accurate data on high wind speeds associated with cyclones and severe weather systems that frequently impact the state.
The HWSRs enhance Odisha’s coastal resilience by capturing crucial, real-time data on wind speed, direction, and pressure. This data feeds directly into forecasting models, significantly improving early warning accuracy and evacuation strategy during severe cyclones.
The Odisha government has been asked to identify suitable sites in the coastal districts and allocate land for the installations. The HWSRs will be installed in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, and Balasore districts.
