Bhubaneswar: In a significant boost to the regional mental healthcare infrastructure, the Department of Psychiatry at IMS and SUM Hospital-2 at Phulnakhara has successfully launched Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) services.
The commencement of the new facility was marked by the successful administration of the first Modified ECT on a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia, hospital sources confirmed.
Dr Bhabani Shankar, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, expressed his immense satisfaction over the development. “Modified ECT remains one of the most effective and critical treatment modalities for acutely disturbed psychiatric patients. We are thrilled to successfully introduce this vital service in our campus,” he said.
Unlike traditional methods, Modified ECT is performed under general anaesthesia and muscle relaxation ensuring maximum safety and comfort for the patient, Dr Shankar said adding the successful rollout of the procedure was the result of seamless teamwork and excellent coordination with the hospital’s Department of Anaesthesia.
Dr Shankar also extended his profound gratitude to the Medical Superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital-2 Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Kumar Lenka and Dean Prof. (Dr.) Snigdha Prava Mishra crediting their constant support, visionary leadership and guidance for making the establishment of this advanced therapeutic facility a reality.
Dr Lagnajit Dash, Associate Professor With the department, informed that the unit was now fully equipped and had become operational with this crucial intervention. The hospital was now offering enhanced care and rapid recovery outcomes for those battling severe mental health conditions, he said.
