[In Pic] Hemananda Biswal No More: A Cong Loyalist & Odisha’s First Tribal CM

Bhubaneswar: Hemananda Biswal, who passed away on Friday at the age of 84, was the first tribal chief minister of Odisha. He held the post of chief minister twice, once from December 7, 1989, to March 3, 1990, and again from December 6, 1999, to March 5, 2000.

He remained loyal to Congress till the end of his long political career.

Biswal was elected to the state Assembly six times. He was elected as an MLA for the first time in 1974. He was also elected to the Lok Sabha from Sundargarh parliamentary constituency in 2009.

The mortal remains of the former chief minister will be consigned to flames at his native place in Jharsuguda district on Saturday with state honours.

He had breathed his last at a private hospital, where he was admitted on February 8 for treatment of pneumonia and septic shock with multi-organ dysfunction, on Friday evening at the age of 84.
