Bhubaneswar: Government buildings across Odisha Capital were illuminated on Thursday, the eve of Utkal Diwas,
Odisha will be celebrating its 87th foundation day on Friday.
The state was officially born on April 1, 1936, after a continued struggle by Madhusudan Das, Gopabandhu Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati, Nilakantha Das, and many others. It was the first state that was formed on a linguistic basis, almost a decade before India achieved independence from British colonisation. It then had six districts, Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, Ganjam, Koraput, and Sambalpur. Sir John Hubbak was the first governor of the state.
Odisha pronounced ‘ODISA’, comes from the Sanskrit ‘ODRA DESHA’ or ‘ODRA VISHAY’.
The state celebrates the day with a restricted holiday. It is also known as Odisha Foundation Day and Vishuva Milan.
