India Assumes Chairmanship of ILO Governing Body After 35 Years

New Delhi: Union Secretary (Labour and Employment) Apurva Chandra has been elected chairperson of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) governing body for the period October 2020-June 2021. India has thus assumed chairmanship of this important global body after a gap of 35 years.

Chandra, who belongs to the 1988 batch of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Maharashtra cadre, will be presiding over the crucial meeting of the governing body – which decides policies, programmes, agenda, budget and elects the Director-General – in November.

The ILO, a United Nations agency, has 187 members currently.
