New Delhi: The government has banned the import of air conditioners (ACs) with refrigerants in a bid to become more self-reliant and promote domestic manufacturing.
“Import policy of air conditioners with refrigerants… is amended from free to prohibited,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
Recently, the import of televisions was banned.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while discussing Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan in June, had pointed out that more than 30 per cent of air conditioners are imported.
