Govt Facing Trouble Reaching Out To Indian Student Shot At In Ukraine’s Kyiv; To Bear His Medical Expenses

Bhubaneswar: Hours after Harjot Singh, an Indian who sustained multiple bullet injuries in war-torn Ukraine, complained about getting no support from the Indian Embassy, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said that they had been trying to reach out but facing trouble as it’s a conflict zone.

Singh, who is from Chhattarpur in Delhi, was shot at while trying to flee Kyiv in a cab with some friends. “A bullet hit my shoulder. They removed a bullet from my chest… my leg is fractured,” he told NDTV.

He further said that he had been trying to contact the embassy but in vain. “Every day they say we will do something but no help yet,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

“It doesn’t matter if you send a charter (plane) after death…God has given me a second life, I want to live it. I request the embassy to evacuate me from here, provide me facilities like a wheelchair, help me with documentation…,” he added.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the government will be bearing expenses for his medical treatment in Kyiv. “We are trying to ascertain his medical status… Our embassy is trying to get an update on his health status…trying to reach out but facing trouble as it’s a conflict zone,” said Bagchi.
