New Delhi: India is offering vaccines manufactured here to diplomats and their families posted in India. The move is expected to highlight India’s image as a major supplier of vaccines and medicines to the world.

However, Indians working in the embassies will not be covered.

“The Government of India, as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity, is considering to offer COVID-19 vaccination to eligible foreign diplomats and their family members accredited to all Diplomatic Missions, including Consulates, United Nations and its specialised agencies and other international organisations, based in lndia,” the letter sent from the Indian Foreign Ministry stated.

It is, however, not clear when the vaccination for them will be carried out.

So far, India is administering two vaccines – Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute of India and developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, and Covaxin manufactured and developed by Bharat Biotech.
