New Delhi: The war with Iran seemed to have pushed the India-US trade deal on the backburner.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Thursday provided an update, hinting that the long-pending bilateral agreement could be inked in April itself.
In a post on X, Gor said that he had a “highly productive” meeting with trade representative Jamieson Greer on how to advance President Donald Trump’s trade priorities in South and Central Asia, and that an Indian delegation will be travelling to Washington later this month for talks on a trade deal.
“The United States and India have previously agreed to a trade deal, and we look forward to welcoming an Indian delegation to Washington later this month,” Gor added.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was expected to be part of the delegation, but will be skipping the visit to Washington to participate in Parliament proceedings, including the introduction of bills aimed at fast-tracking implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
India and the US announced a bilateral trade agreement on February 2 following months of negotiations, with President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing the pact as “historic”.
A reduction in tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18% was among the key provisions of the deal.
