New Delhi: As FASTag becomes compulsory throughout the nation, Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry is coming up with a new toll collection system based on global positioning system (GPS) technology.
It will remove all toll barriers as toll will be deducted directly from a linked account whenever a vehicle passes through a toll zone.
“We have finalized a GPS system with the help of Russian government. In two years, India will be toll naka mukt,” Gadkari said at the ASSOCHAM Foundation Week on Thursday.
Modern commercial vehicles have GPS in-built. The government will facilitate installing the system in older vehicles.
“Yesterday there was a presentation in presence of secretary, road transport and highways and chairman, NHAI, by using GPS technology for toll collection we are expecting that our toll income in next five years will be ₹1,34,000 crore,” Gadkari added.
