New Delhi: India witnessed the highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 5,242 people testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, which also saw 157 deaths.
With this, the coronavirus tally has risen to 96,169 with 56,316 active cases and 3,029 deaths. So far, 36,823 people have been fully cured and discharged from the hospitals, the Health Ministry reports said.
The spike in cases came on the day when the central government extended the lockdown till May 31 and issued guidelines, relaxing various norms. The government has allowed state governments to decide the Red, Orange and Green zones in their territories and also take control of the activities in any specific area.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state with 33,053 cases and 1,198 deaths, followed by Gujarat with 11,379 confirmed cases and 659 deaths. The Tamil Nadu and Delhi are also among the major hotspots, according to the reports.
