Melbourne: Rockbank, a suburb in Melbourne, will soon have streets and lanes in a housing estate named after Indian cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Virat Kohli.
The suburb is extremely popular among the Indian community Down Under, as they prefer buying houses there. The developers of the estate are luring buyers with a ‘Tendulkar Drive’, ‘Kohli Crescent’ and ‘Dev Terrace’.
“The response from the Indian community has been exceptionally good and high ever since the launch of the packages,” said Elissa Hayes on behalf of the developers.
The norm is for developers to submit names of streets, which then have to be approved by the city council if they meet official guidelines.
Sixty names were submitted to the council for approval, including one named after Sir Don Bradman. But the council turned it down as there was already a street named after him in Melbourne.
Among other names refused for one reason or other were Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakara.
But the council did approve names of other international cricketers like ‘Waugh Street’, ‘Miandad Street’, ‘Ambrose Street’, ‘Sobers Drive’, ‘Kallis Way’, ‘Hadlee Street’ and ‘Akram Way’.
