Cuttack: An inmate of Choudwar Circle Jail in Odisha’s Cuttack district was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside the prison complex on Sunday evening.
The deceased has been identified as M D Kalim, an undertrial prisoner was an under-trial prisoner (UTP) accused in a murder case, allegedly died by suicide.
According to jail sources, Kalim was found unconscious with a noose around his neck inside his cell on Sunday evening. He was immediately rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where doctors declared him dead.
Jail authorities have not yet disclosed the exact circumstances that led to his death, though it has been officially recorded as a suspected suicide. Kalim was lodged in the psychiatric ward of the jail premises in cell number 6. Jail officials rubbished allegations of negligence on their part. The jailer said that Kalim committed suicide by hanging himself to death by tying his towel around his neck and latching it to an iron rod of his window of prison cell.
This latest incident comes at a time when Choudwar Circle Jail has already been facing intense scrutiny. Just last month, 2 notorious Bihar-based criminals escaped from the jail during Dussehra celebrations in October, 2025.
