Kolkata: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee erupted in fury during a rare joint appearance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event in the city on Saturday evening.
The event at Victoria Memorial was hosted to honour Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on his 125th birth anniversary.
Mamata erupted in fury when she was greeted with chants of “Jai Shri Ram” and “Modi, Modi, Modi” during her speech.
“Don’t insult me after calling me here. This is not a political programme,” the Bengal CM admonished the crowd before cutting short her speech, NDTV reported.
Notably, the BJP and ruling Trinamool Congress in Bengal are engaged in a bitter tussle over the celebrations of Netaji’s birth anniversary.
While Mamata led a 6-km march in Kolkata from Shyambazar in the north to Red Road in the heart of the city, PM Modi presided over the inauguration of a permanent exhibition on Netaji at Victoria Memorial.
The Bengal CM has already lashed out at the Centre over the naming of Netaji’s birth anniversary as “Parakram Diwas”. She had urged the Centre to declare it as “Desh Nayak Diwas” as Rabindranath Tagore had bestowed the title of Desh Nayak on Netaji.
