Bhubaneswar: Restrictions on internet services were extended in Odisha’s Malkangiri district for the sixth straight time.
The decision was taken by the Malkangiri district administration after assessing the ground situation on Saturday.
District Collector Somesh Kumar Upadhyay and Superintendent of Police Vinodh Patil H announced at a press conference that the restrictions would remain in force till Monday noon.
On Friday, Deputy CM K V Singh Deo and MSME, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development minister Gokulananda Mallik submitted a report to chief minister Mohan Majhi on violence-hit Malkangiri after reviewing the situation on ground.
Internet curbs were first imposed on December 8, a day after clashes erupted at MV-26 village. A tribal mob, belonging to neighbouring Rakhelguda village, allegedly attacked the Bengali settlement area after a headless body of 51-year-old Lake Podiami was found at the Poteru riverbank.
Meanwhile, the curfew imposed on December 7 under Section 163 of BNS within a 10-km radius of MV-26 village was lifted.
According to the Collector, preliminary estimates suggest that the violence caused damages worth around Rs 4 crore.
The administration has been providing cooked food, clothing and tarpaulin sheets, and facilitating restoration of water and electricity supply for residents who have returned to the village.
