Internet sensation Ranu Mondal was reportedly in Puri on Thursday to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath after recording two songs – Teri Meri Kahaani and Aadat – with music director Himesh Reshammiya for his upcoming movie ‘Happy Hardy and Heer’.
A photograph of her claiming her presence in the Pilgrim Town of Odisha is now doing the rounds on social media.
Ranu won the internet with her rendition of Ek pyaar ka nagma hai at the Ranaghat railway station, a video of which went viral on social media recently. To encourage and support her talent, an NGO gave her a makeover and TV show Superstar Singer also invited her to one of its episodes aired last weekend.
Himesh Reshammiya, who is one of the judges of the show, had then promised her a big break in Bollywood. He later shared videos of the recording with her.
Now fondly addressed as ‘Lata of Ranaghat’, Ranu was born in Krishnanagar, West Bengal. She spent most of her childhood in Ranaghat at her aunt’s place after her mother’s demise. She had shifted to Mumbai after her marriage at the age of 19. She returned to Ranaghat again after the death of her husband. She would sing at the railway station and bought food for herself with the money passers-by gave her. Atindra Chakraborty, a 26-year old engineer, shot her video and posted on Facebook on July 23. And as they say the rest is history.
Odia actor-comedian Papu Pom Pom recently drew flak for mocking Ranu in a TikTok video. The actor later apologised and said that it was done with a positive intent to popularise her song.
