Mumbai: The 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) will be held from September 19 to November 8, IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed on Friday. The popular T20 league will be held in the UAE, provided the necessary clearance is issued by the Union government.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)-organized tournament was originally scheduled to be held from March 29, but had to be postponed because of the coronavirus-induced lockdown. The Board was looking for an alternative window, and once it was clear that the ICC World T20 meet in Australia (October 18 to November 15) would be postponed, BCCI got down to business.
Staging the tournament in India was obviously the first choice of the Board and the franchises. But since COVID-19 cases have been rising alarmingly in India, and with international flights far from being normalized, the BCCI had to shift the tournament out of the country.
The Governing Council will meet next week to work out further details, including the schedule of the tournament.
