Is Bangladesh Crisis A Reason For Non-Renewal Of Taslim Nasreen’s Residence Permit In India?

Kolkata: Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen is facing uncertainty about her future in India. The author claimed that her Indian residence permit that had expired in July was yet to be renewed by the government, an India Today report stated.

In an interview to a news channel, Nasreen had expressed that she liked staying in India but it had been about a month and a half that her residence permit had not been renewed.

Nasreen, who holds a Swedish citizenship, had been living in India since 2011. The author claimed that she was not getting any answers from the government officials regarding the renewal. She had also stated that she was unsure of whom to contact within the Union Home Ministry for assistance.

“I keep checking my status online but haven’t received any confirmation yet. Even now the status on the website shows ‘updating’. This has never happened before,” she said, as quoted by India Today.

The author has, however, denied that there was any possible connection of her permit renewal with the current situation in Bangladesh.

She claimed that her permit was cancelled before the political turmoil erupted in Bangladesh. According to the author, a similar issue had occurred in 2017 due to a ‘technical problem.’
