Mumbai: It was a landmark day in the history of India’s automobile sector as Elon Musk-headed Tesla opened its first showroom in the country at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Tuesday.
Soon after the official launch event of Model Y electric SUV, attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, social media users bombarded internet with a barrage of funny posts and memes.
Some were genuinely thrilled about Tesla cars being available in India now. But most netizens took sarcastic jibes at the announcement.
Among the most viral posts on X and other platforms were the ones mocking Mumbai roads’ condition.
“Tesla showroom opens in Mumbai… now potholes have a smarter car to bully,” while another said, “Is Tesla ready for Mumbai’s potholes?”
One user went to the extent of editing an image of cows and sheep outside the Tesla showroom to show India’s road scene in large metros. “Could there be a more perfect photo showing Tesla’s new Mumbai experience centre?” read the caption.
Another popular theme in the posts was regarding the cost of a Tesla in India and its impact on middle-class households. “Tesla India aagaya… Middle class: ‘Bhai EMI kitni hogi?’ Tesla: ‘Tum bas showroom ke bahar selfie lelo’.”
There was another popular subject among the funny posts: the raging language in Maharashtra and the signage used for the EV.
“Tesla please clarify,” said one user with a meme showing a lady claiming, “It’s Marathi..” while a cat clarified, “Hindi mein likha hai mitro”
“It’s marathi not hindi.. Brand name, Company name also Company GST number is written in Marathi,” someone tried to settle the issue, while another netizen posted, “Hindi aur marathi mein same likha jata hai tesla”.
