New Delhi: Going by reports coming in from all over the world, it will be quite a while before we can ditch face masks. However, as shutdowns end and some offices reopen, wearing face masks for long periods can be quite a task.
Besides problems like skin rash, more and more people are complaining of dry, uncomfortable eyes. Those who have an existing dry eye disease are reporting worsening symptoms.
What happens to the eyes when we wear a mask?
Face masks reduce the spread of air outwards from the mouth and nose. However, exhaled air still needs to disperse; when a mask sits loosely against the face, the likely route is upwards. So, a stream of air goes over the surface of the eye and evaporate the tear film in the eyes. For those who wear glasses, it is worse due to lens fogging, reported Scroll.in quoting an article in ‘The Conversation’.
When masks are worn for extended periods, this repeated evaporation may lead to dry spots on the ocular surface, the report added.
Others who can be affected
The elderly, who have less efficient tears are likely to have dry eyes syndrome due to face masks too.
Prolonged use of face masks in air-conditioned locations may also trigger mask-associated dry eye. Increased digital device use while wearing masks also causes similar dryness, the report added.
What should one do?
- One way of overcoming the problem is by wearing a mask appropriately, particularly if one is wearing spectacles and sunglasses. A close-fitted mask, or carefully taped top edge that does not interfere with blinking, may help direct airflow downwards. This helps prevent lenses from steaming and reduces mask-associated dry eye.
- You could also ask your eye care practitioner to recommend lubricating drops.
- Limit time in air-conditioned or windy environments when wearing masks, and take regular breaks from digital devices.
Come what may, don’t ditch the mask!
