Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday proposed making PAN and Aadhaar cards interchangeable for ease of filing income tax returns.
Reading out her maiden Budget speech in Parliament, the Finance Minister said, “More than 120 crore Indians now have Aadhar cards. Therefore for ease of tax payers, I propose to make the PAN card and Aadhar card interchangeable and allow those who don’t have PAN to file returns by simply quoting Aadhar number and use it wherever they require to use PAN.”
Sitharaman also said that non-resident Indians (NRIs) may get Aadhaar cards on arrival, without the mandatory waiting period.
